Hedge Trimming in Southend, Whether It Is a Neat Tidy or a Big Cut-Back
Southend Tree Surgeons arranges hedge trimming across Southend-on-Sea and the surrounding towns, carried out by NPTC-qualified, fully insured tree surgery teams.
We trim hedges of every kind, from a low box or privet hedge at the front of the house to tall beech, laurel, hawthorn and conifer hedges along a boundary. Regular trimming keeps them dense, healthy and in proportion.
We also take on hedges that have been left to grow. Many broadleaved hedges can be cut back hard and will regrow, but some conifers, particularly leylandii, will not regrow from old wood, so cutting them back too far can leave bare brown patches. We look at the hedge first and tell you what is possible. Southend has many tall hedges of privet, laurel, leylandii and Monterey cypress, and the sea wind means they need regular attention.

Wildlife and the Law
Birds nest in hedges from early spring to late summer, and it is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to damage an active nest. Because of that we normally avoid major hedge work between March and August unless we have checked carefully, and we will tell you if a job needs to wait.
If a neighbour's evergreen hedge, such as leylandii, is blocking your light, there is a process under the high hedges rules, which usually starts with talking to your neighbour and then involves your local council. We can explain how it works.

Hedge Trimming: Common Questions
When is the best time to cut a hedge?
For most hedges, late summer through winter, outside the bird nesting season. Formal hedges often need a trim in early summer as well, subject to checking for nests.
Can you cut my leylandii hedge down in size?
Often yes, but leylandii will not regrow from bare wood. We can reduce them to the green growth and advise if the hedge is better removed and replaced.
Do you take the cuttings away?
Yes. We chip or remove everything unless you would like to keep any of it.
